Theory and calibration of the Schiotz tonometer. I. The boundary surface of the cornea.

چکیده
T JLo -onography as developed by Grant has been useful in both laboratory and clinic in elucidating the mechanisms of aqueous dynamics and of glaucoma and in assessing drug action. Tonography is the direct outgrowth of Friedenwald's" work on calibration of the Schi0tz tonometer. The present series of papers is devoted to a re-examination of some of the basic concepts of indentation tonometry in an attempt to improve tonography. In his initial publication on tonometry, Friedenwald stated: "Naturally, it is with the posterior surface of the cornea that we are concerned" (p. 1004). Later, he explained the differing indentation volumes obtained in eyes of different species on the basis of this assumption (p. 120, ff).

Theory and calibration of the Schiotz tonometer. II. The resistance of the cornea to deformation.
.lthough the cornea is very flexible, force must be required to bend it. Goldmann and Schmidt' and Gloster and Perkins following Imbert and Fick have considered bending resistance in applantation tonometry. Friedenwald however, in his studies on Schi0tz tonometry, came to the conclusion that the resistance of the cornea to deformation is negligibly small. The corneal bending forces involved in ...

PURPOSE Post-Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) patients are prone for intraocular pressure (IOP) elevations and glaucoma. Corneal characteristics influence various IOP measuring devices in various ways. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement between four different IOP measuring devices: Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT), I-care pro, Tonopen XL, and Schiotz tonom...
متن کاملUnderstanding and caring for a Schiotz tonometer
A Schiotz tonometer is an instrument for measuring the intraocular pressure (IOP). Although the Schiotz tonometer does not make as precise measurements as other types of tonometers, it is inexpensive, simple to use, durable, requires little maintenance, does not have electronics, does not require batteries, and can be stored for years between uses. These qualities make it well suited for screen...

متن کاملEffect of Tonography on Facility of Outflow.
In enucleated stored eyes facility of outflow is diminished by large corneal distortions. The radius of distortion at which decrease in facility is noted is related to the shape of the distortion. Of the three distorting devices tested, a plane surface decreased the facility at the smallest radius of distortion, a convex surface was intermediate in effect, while the Schiotz tonometer allowed th...
